Since I can remember, I’ve always picked up little stones, licked them to see if there were streaks, specks, or something special on them. Those special stones went home in pockets full, and I tried to hide them in my closet – but Mom often sorted through our girls’ closets and threw away my stones. So I started burying my treasures in bags full in our garden, until Dad put in a swimming pool for us. With his digging through my bags of stones, and my sad face explaining how beautiful each one was, my dad took me down into one of the gold mine shafts, where he let me extract my first true mineral. A complete bed of white quartz crystals, full of quartz needles. I was overwhelmed, and this 12-year-old girl wanted to become a miner right then and there to see beautiful minerals all day long. My first quartz crystal now proudly adorns my workshop.
